Agentic AI’s Prove-It Year: How to Spot Agent Washing

Agentic Ai Vs Automation
agentic AI vs automation

Most companies selling “AI agents” right now are selling automation with a new label on it. The real test is simple: can someone with no technical background actually get the outcome being promised, today, without an engineer standing behind them.

What’s the actual difference between a real AI agent and “agent washing”?

Estimates put the number of vendors genuinely building agentic systems, software that can act on its own across a real workflow, at only a small fraction of everyone currently marketing the term. The rest is ordinary automation, or a chatbot, repackaged to ride the wave. The demos look identical. The difference only shows up once you actually try to use it.

Why is that difference so hard to spot from the outside?

Because the models underneath these systems are improving so quickly that a genuinely good “harness,” the layer that lets an AI act rather than just answer, can be replicated by a competitor in days once someone else has proven the pattern works. That makes it very hard to tell a real technical moat from a head start that is about to evaporate, and it is exactly why funding a narrow, single-industry harness right now is a weaker bet than it looks. Whoever builds it well gets copied fast.

So how do you actually test a claim like this?

Ignore the demo. Ask whether someone with no technical background can get the promised result themselves, unassisted, today. If the honest answer is not yet, that is not necessarily dishonesty on the vendor’s part, it usually means the technology is real but the maturity is not there. The gap between “this will work” and “this works right now” is where almost all of the current hype actually lives.

Does that mean agentic AI is overhyped?

No, it means it is early, and early is not the same as fake. Even OpenAI’s own framing of its most recent model, calling it the start of what the company itself terms the “AGI era,” is worth treating the same way, as a claim to test, not a fact to accept. The honest position is not skepticism or hype, it is closer to genuine excitement paired with a habit of actually checking. Every finish line in this field turns out to be the start of the next race the moment you reach it, and that is not a reason to wait, it is the whole reason to stay close to it now.

What would you actually see if you tested the AI agent claims in front of you today, rather than took the demo at face value? The agentic internet is already being built around us, and the same claim-versus-reality gap shows up in ordinary AI pilots too.
